This book uses the artworks of some twenty international creators to study methods of transforming metal in contemporary design. Forty objects have been classified into sixteen categories, illustrating how these creators have reconnected with the tradition of industrial know-how and craftsmanship, while experimenting with new forms of production. Some experiment with the material and its properties, others question the physical limits of existing techniques (e.g.: forging, pressing, extruding, foaming, additive printing, spinning, etc). Accompanied by a historical text recounting the uses of metal in furniture since the 18th century, this publication brings together numerous biographies, explanatory texts and a technical lexicon explaining the methods used in metal transformation.
Within the framework of this project, an exhibition was developed for the newly established Konschthal based in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), one of the historic centers of the European steel industry.
